Laser Eye Surgery

What does laser correction of vision mean?

Laser correction of vision means refractive surgery through which the vision is improved. Refractive surgery improves the ability of eye focusing, as it changes the shape of the cornea and the transparent front part of the eye. As a result of laser correction of vision, the patient’s vision will be recovered, and no eye-glasses or contact lenses will be required.

What technologies are used for vision correction?

The National Center of Ophthalmology at New Hospitals uses state-of-the-art technology - Carl Zeiss Visumax Femtosecond / Excimer Laser Mel-90 for the laser correction of the vision, which represents accurate and safe technology in refractive surgery. Femto-laser allows the surgeon to make without the surgical knife an incision in the cornea of the desired depth with precision accuracy, using the smallest laser impulse and best optics. Vision correction procedure is rapid, painless and characterized by zero risks of infection. The duration of the procedure is only few seconds, and the result is obtained immediately after the procedure is completed.

Why is femto-laser considered as the best?

LASIK is a common method of laser correction of vision, while Visumax Femto- Excimer laser system is a more secure and accurate technology. Femto-laser is so accurate that even an inscription can be done on the hair with this technology. Unlike the standard LASIK procedure, during Femto-excimer laser surgery procedure, a corneal incision is made not by a surgical knife, but by Femto-excimer laser, which delivers pulses of light in a quadrillionth of a second, in pre-selected and programmed depth and position within the cornea. Femto technology is used to select the depth of the incision and to cut the corneal tissue with ultra-short laser pulses. Therefore, Femto-excimer laser completely excludes the use of the lancet.
The Femto-excimer laser surgery is made under low intraocular pressure and does not develop retinal raptures and does not require so-called strengthening of the retina. The Femto-excimer laser allows treatment of the patients, who cannot be treated with traditional refractive surgery due to the insufficient thickness or very high refractive errors of the cornea.

Who needs laser surgery and what can be cured with Femto-excimer laser surgery?

Short-sightedness, long-sightedness, and astigmatism may be correlated with Femto-excimer laser. Femto-laser surgery is the best technology for those who want to live comfortably - without eyeglasses or contact lenses.

What is Femto-laser and how does it work?

Femto-laser is a combination of ultra-short infrared pulses that replaced the surgical knife. The duration of each pulse is a femtosecond, i.e., one quadrillionth (10-15). Thousands of pulses of Femto-excimer laser are gathered at one point and determine the depth of the cornea incision through pre-programming. Each pulse of the laser produces a microscopic gas, which separates the cornea from adjacent tissue.

The advantages of Femto-Excimer laser

  • The surgical knife is not used. Consequently, the complications caused by the surgical knife are eliminated (e.g., the rapture of a section, the creation of a thick section, infection, high vacuum, severe postoperative redness of an eye).
  • The maximum accuracy of the section of the cornea is provided by Femto-excimer laser. The section is created with high accuracy even when patients have too much-thinned cornea or severe defect of sight.
  • The eye is protected from infection, since the section is done with Femto-excimer laser, without damaging the surface of the eye..
  • The lens of the new generation corresponding to the anatomic structure of the cornea protects the eye from the tension.
  • The procedure lasts for a few minutes, and the result is visible immediately after its completion.
