Thrombolysis Performed Successfully at New Hospitals and Stroke Patient Fully Recovered
On July 28th, a French patient, Vincenzo F. with the ischemic stroke was placed at New Hospitals Stroke Center. The patient had the following symptoms: loss of consciousness, weakness in the left limbs, facial asymmetry and impaired speech, which had developed 15 minutes before placement in New Hospitals. The ambulance crew No. 1117 transported the patient on time, which played an important role in the patient’s recovery.
Upon admission to the stroke center, the patient underwent examinations provided by the medical protocol and was prescribed systemic thrombolysis - alteplase transfusion. Patient status improved during transfusion - limb weakness was eliminated and speech was restored. After completing the thrombolysis procedure, the patient was placed in a neurological ward, under the supervision of an experienced team of New Hospitals neurologists led by Temur Marghania.
The patient was discharged from New Hospitals without a neurological deficit and feels well. Noteworthy is that magnetic resonance angiography confirmed blood flow recovery in the right middle artery.
Systemic thrombolysis is a modern method of treatment of ischemic stroke, by means of the blood clot in the bloodstream may be lysed, blood circulation restored and brain tissue damage prevented. Thrombolysis is an emergency medical procedure and involves intravenous injection of alteplase, which lyses the blood clots in the arteries that cause ischemic stroke. It is important to conduct this procedure within the next few hours of stroke development, to minimize the injuries caused by stroke. New Hospitals is one of the first hospital to introduce treatment of ischemic stroke through thrombolysis in Georgia. The Neurology Department of New Hospitals is staffed by experienced physicians and constantly applies modern methods of treatment.
