Cataract
What is cataract?
Cataract is the clouding of one eye lens, during which the eyesight becomes indistinct, and resembles a vision in the fog. The patients with blurred vision caused by cataract have difficulty in differentiating colors, reading, driving a vehicle, or performing other daily activities. Cataract is the most common cause of visual impairment around the world, and 51% of blindness is caused by cataract.
You may have cataract, if:
- you have blurred eyesight
- perceive the image more vaguely or yellowish
- vision is impairment at night
- light irritates your eyes
- you see light circles around the light
- you need a good light for reading
- you change eye-glasses frequently
- you see objects double
With the increase of cataract, over time the sight is deteriorating sharply and the symptoms become more noticeable.
WHEN TO SEEK A MEDICAL ADVICE:
- Consult your doctor when you notice a change of eyesight.
- If you have a severe deterioration of an eyesight or see the objects double, consult your doctor immediately.
Who may be affected by cataract?
An eye injury, some diseases and medication may result in cataract. However, the cataract develops mainly with age. There are several factors contributing to the development of cataracts:
- After 55 years of age
- Diabetes
- Metabolic disorder
- Ultraviolet irradiation (being under the sun for a long time)
- Eye injury or eye diseases
- Excess weight
- Tobacco consumption
- Excessive consumption of alcohol
- Long-term treatment with corticosteroids
Causes of cataract
The deterioration of the eyesight generally occurs with age. The natural lens, where cataracts develop, is located behind a colored membrane. The lens is transparent and functions as a lens of the camera. It focuses the image on the retina. With the increase of years, the lens becomes less flexible, thickens and loses transparency. The cataract impedes the penetration of light rays in the eyes and consequently, leads to a deterioration of vision. Cataract may develop in both eyes, though unequally and may cause different eyesight between the eyes.
How to cure a Cataract
Cataract is not cured by medicaments and the only way to cure it is a surgery. At “New Hospitals” the cataract surgery is carried out using the latest ultrasonic phacoemulsification method, using modern technologies - the best ophthalmologic microscope (Opmi Lumera Zeiss) and ultra-modern combined ultrasonic apparatus (Alcon Centurion System). The surgery implies a return of acuity to the sight in a few minutes, during which the old, clouded natural lens is replaced by a new, artificial intraocular lens. The surgical procedure is painless because it is performed under topical anesthesia (except for the cases, when the patient’s condition requires surgery to be performed under general anesthesia). A small rate incision is made, from where the surgeon removes a clouded lens and inserts a new artificial intraocular lens instead.
Upon completion of the operation, the patient receives the doctor's prescription and returns home the same day. The sight is rapidly improved after the surgery and will eventually be restored in a few days.
What is an intraocular lens?
An artificial intraocular lens, or intraocular lens, replaces the natural clouded lens and is implants in its place. There are many types of intraocular lens that differ from each other by substance, physical properties, design, size or optical characteristics.
It is important to select an intraocular lens made from a reliable and tested substance that will ideally replace the natural lens and perform its function over the years. “New Hospital” offers the intraocular lens made from the latest technology, composed of the hydrophobic substance. It is characterized by high biocompatibility with eye tissue, tightly fixes to the rear capsules and protects the eye from the development of secondary cataract.
