Lagophthalmos
What is Lagophthalmos?
Lagophthalmos or hare eye is the inability to close the eyelids completely.
What are the causes of lagophthalmos
Lagophthalmos can arise from a stroke or malfunction of the facial nerve (paralysis). Lagophthalmos may also develop in the eye post-trauma period, during which complications such as dry eye syndrome, corneal inflammation (keratitis), corneal ulcer, corneal perforation, etc. may occur.
Treatment of lagophthalmos with an innovative method
The National Center for Ophthalmology at New Hospitals has an innovative way of lagophthalmos treatment that allows the patient to avoid the possible complications listed above without surgical intervention and to preserve vision and maintain a normal lifestyle.
Treatment of lagophthalmos with a surgical method - blepharorrhaphy
Before the above complications are detected, to prevent them, or in the early stages of the disease, when the patient has a high vision and no changes in the cornea, blepharorrhaphy (fixation of the upper and lower eyelids together) may be conducted. This procedure inflicts discomfort in the patient, both in terms of vision and limited ability to work. Therefore treatment of lagophthalmos with an innovative method is very effective. An innovative procedure is possible if the patient does not have complications in the cornea.
